After completing the reading and written paper this week it has gotten me thinking about the direction I want to take in the school I am currently working. I have never really seen myself as anything other than a classroom teacher and a soccer coach, although after reflecting on the issues within my department I am curious if there is anything I could do to help. This coming school year we will have a new department chair and at the time of elections I had thought about the position, yet I know there it more work involved than hours in the day allow. And there are times were I do not have enough hours just to complete my teaching job successfully. I am not sure where I am headed, yet I would like to invoke on using more technology within my classroom this school year and see how I can progress within the district. I usually find myself on the fence of most decisions because I can see both sides of the "coin," and can make do with either decision. I am really curious and concerns about the new curriculum/textbook that the high school will adapt as it will be something total foreign to myself and many of my colleagues. Again, only time will tell what will happen.

Amanda, are you then happy that you didn't try for the department chair position? And how does the vote work? Does everyone in your department get to vote on any other person for the chair, or do you make a general announcement that you are interested in running for chair? At our school, the principal decides who becomes chair if more than one person expresses interest.

Yet as a leader you have the ability to move things forward. Sitting on the fence is not leading but is avoiding the issues. It does not mean that you cannot hear all sides prior to making a decision, but as a leader you do need to use data to make decisions and move ahead.

Imagine if any administrator only listened but did not act. Are they leading? Or if in soccer you only watched but did not provide feedback on how the students could improve. Use your knowledge to make decisions, some will be worng but ten use data to correct and move ahead.
